Williams Matches Career-High with 16 Points
DEMOREST, Ga. – Madison Williams matched her career high with 16 points, but Maryville couldn't hold a late lead in falling to Piedmont 56-45 Saturday afternoon.
The teams traded impressive runs during the final 11½ minutes of the game. Maryville struck first, firing off 12 points in a row over the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth to take a 39-30 advantage on a pair of Emma Huskey free throws with 7:47 remaining.
But Piedmont answered with its own 15-0 run to regain the lead 45-39, the surge capped by Ashley Scott's free throws with 3:35 left. The host Lions then extended their flurry to 26-6 over the final 7:27 to improve to 11-5 in the CCS and 15-10 overall.
Williams just missed her second double-double of the season, finishing with nine rebounds. Huskey also grabbed nine boards to go with her 10 points. Courtney Carruthers scored seven points, had seven rebounds and four steals.
Anna Kate Bechman also had a career-high four steals.
The Scots trailed 14-8 at the end of one quarter and 20-17 at the half as both teams struggled to find the range from the floor. Maryville then slipped in front 31-30 on a pair of Williams free throws late in the third quarter, and the Scots extended that lead into the fourth before falling short.
Maryville shot just 20.4 percent (10-of-49) from the field for the game, although the Scots were much more successful at the free throw line. Maryville finished 23-of-29, good for a season high in made free throws and tying the season high in attempts.
The Scots finish fifth in the regular season at 8-8 in league play and 11-14 overall. They play Wednesday in the CCS Tournament quarterfinals at fourth-seeded Belhaven, with a start time to be determined.
