Cortland Women Withstand Late Brockport Surge in 69-60 Victory

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Cortland had a 21-point third-quarter lead shrink to four midway through the fourth quarter but the Red Dragons pulled away late for a 69-60 SUNYAC women's basketball victory at Brockport.
 
Beth Bonin (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) led Cortland (5-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) with 17 points, including 9-for-9 accuracy from the foul line. Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) added 10 points and eight rebounds, Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) scored nine points and grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds, and Sarah Tully (East Aurora) pulled down nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
 
Cortland was sparked by its bench play as the Red Dragons' reserves scored 29 of the team's 69 points. Cortland outscored Brockport 20-5 in the second quarter, with 18 of those points from non-starters, to take a 37-20 halftime lead. Jess Womble (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills East) scored seven of her career-high nine points in the quarter and also finished the game with a career-high tying three assists, two in the quarter.
 
Maggie Malone (Cornwall) registered career bests of six points, five rebounds and four assists. She posted four points and three assists in the second quarter. Tatiana Stevens (Shirley/Longwood) scored six points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field.
 
Julianna Taylor hit four 3-pointers for Brockport (3-4, 0-2 SUNYAC) and finished with a game-high 27 points. Kylee Rosbrook scored 10 points and led the Golden Eagles with six rebounds and Zaria McCullough distributed six assists.
 
Cortland led 48-27 with 4:13 left in the third after a Bonin 3-point play, but Brockport finished the quarter on a 10-0 run, including eight points by Taylor, and trailed by 10 entering the fourth. The hosts got to within four at 51-47 on Taylor's 3-pointer with 6:47 remaining, but Longford scored on a putback at the 6:22 mark and hit two free throws with 5:44 on the clock to push Cortland's lead to eight.
 
Brockport was back within five twice, the second time on a Taylor layup with 4:02 left. Longford hit a layup off a Womble pass with 3:26 left, and after the teams came up empty on their next two possessions each, Bonin hit two foul shots at the 1:35 mark to extend the margin to nine. The lead was at least seven the rest of the way and got as high as 12 before a late Brockport 3-pointer created the final score.
 
Cortland will host SUNY Poly in a non-league game next Saturday at noon.
