Hartford, Conn. – Senior tri-captain Peace Kabari (Manchester, N.H.) had game-highs of 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two blocks to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 80-62 victory over the visiting Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks in women's basketball action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity wins its eighth game in a row to head into exams with an 8-1 mark, and has a 23-day layoff until its next game at Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Monday, December 30 at 5 p.m. Stevens drops to 2-5 with its third consecutive setback, and will host College of New Jersey in its next contest on December 28 in its Holiday Classic Tournament.
Trinity trailed, 17-13, after the first quarter but erupted for 28 points in the second stanza, and led by double digits the entire second half. Stevens scored five in a row to go ahead, 15-9, at the three-minute mark of the opening frame after a trey by senior guard Emily Nunez (San Marcos, Calif.). Trinity sophomore guard Bailey Hyland (Broad Brook, Conn.) hit a jumper for the final points of the first quarter, and Hyland and Kabari drilled back-to-back three-pointers to open the second quarter. Leading, 25-24, with 5:13 on the clock, the Bantams ended the first half with a 17-2 run. Bantam sophomore center Elizabeth Althoff (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored six points during the run, and the home team led, 41-26, at the break.
Trinity led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, but the Ducks used a 9-2 spurt to cut its deficit to 58-48 after three periods. Trinity answered with a 12-0 run early in the fourth frame to go ahead by 22 at 72-50 on a fast-break layup by senior tri-captain center Emily Peters (North Attleboro, Mass.) with 5:10 remaining. Trinity outrebounded the Ducks, 41-25, and caused 21 turnovers but committed 20 of their own. The Bantams shot 50 percent from the floor (32-64) to offset Stevens' 53.3 percent clip from long range (8-15) and an 82.4 percentage from the foul line
Three Bantams joined Kabari in double figures in scoring, including Althoff who scored 18 and added five rebounds. Hyland scored 15 points and dished three assists, while Peters came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down seven rebounds. Junior guard Christina Li (Anaheim, Calif.) paced Stevens with 18 points, sinking all four of her attempts from beyond the arc and seven of nine shots overall. Duck sophomore forward Meghan Douglas (Branchburg, N.J.) added 11 points and five steals, while classmate Jess Broad (Marlboro, N.J.) grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
