Trinity Women's Basketball Defeats Coast Guard

New London, Conn. - Sophomore guard Bailey Hyland (Broad Brook, Conn.) was one of five Trinity College players in double figures and she registered a double-double with game-highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bantams to a 72-62 win over the host United States Coast Guard Academy Bears.  Trinity improves to 3-1, while Coast Guard suffered its first loss and dropped to 3-1.  Trinity plays New England College on Friday at 5 p.m. Gordon College Classic.  The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they play at Nichols at 1:00. 

Sophomore Katie Kirsch (Pelham, N.H.) and Kaylen Campbell (Hillsborough, N.C.) each added 12 points for Trinity while senior tri-captain Peace Kabari (Manchester, N.H.) finished with 10 points in the win.  Sophomores Emma Puddington and Kyra Hartman each had 14 points to lead the Bears while senior Zoe Riis-Fallica and freshman Jacqueline Ward added nine points each. Freshman Branyelle Carillo had a career-high 10 rebounds to lead the Bears.

Trinity jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 6:38 left thanks to four points apiece by Fuller and Kabari. Coast Guard took its first lead of the game, 13-12, on a three-pointer by Annabella Farabaugh with 2:18 left in the opening quarter. Coast Guard led, 20-17, after one.  The Bears led by as many as five, 25-20, with 7:51 left in the second quarter. The Bantams then used a 13-2 run to open up a 33-27 lead with 2:08 remaining in the half. Trinity led, 34-31, at the half.

The Bantams scored the first seven points of the third quarter starting a 13-3 run to take a 47-33 lead with 5:04 left on a layup by rookie guard Madison Stevens (Burlington, Conn.).  Coast Guard answered right back with 11 straight cutting the lead to 47-44 on a trey by Riis-Fallica with 3:24 remaining in the third. The Bantams led 52-47 after three.

Trinity once again used a big run to start the quarter and take control of the game, as the Bantams scored 10 of the first 11 points in the fourth to take a 62-48 lead with 6:24 left capped on a pair of layups by Kirsch.  Trinity shot 41.8 percent (28 of 67) while making 4 of 16 from 3-point range while Coast Guard was 23 of 62 (37.1 percent) and connected on 7 of 25 from behind the arc.
