Boston, MA --- Senior Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, CA) scored 18 points to lead Emerson to a 61-55 triumph over visiting WPI in a NEWMAC women's basketball contest Wednesday night in Brown & Plofker Gym.
The Lions head into Saturday's regular season finale with 16-8 ledger overall and 10-5 in league action while the Engineers are now 10-13 and 5-10.
Junior Quinn Madden (Mokena, IL) added 12 points for the hosts while classmate Natalie Clydesdale (Pittsburgh, PA) registered eight points and eight rebounds. Junior Kate Foultz (Thousand Oaks, CA) and sophomore Rachel Davey (Saratoga, CA) combined to score 15 as senior Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) and sophomore Sam Boyle (Scotts Valley, CA) netted four apiece.
Freshman Victoria Mirecki (Rock Tavern, NY) led the Engineers with 13 points, four assists and a game-best 11 rebounds. Sophomore Caitlin Boermeester (Billerica, MA) notched a dozen points to go with nine by freshman Alex Scariati (Scotch Plains, NJ). Junior Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) chipped in with six points as senior Alyssa Paul (Schaghticoke, NY) and junior Alexa Itsines (Nazareth, PA) each recorded four for the Engineers.
Trailing by eight after the first half, WPI used an 11-2 run to take the 30-29 lead following a triple by Boermeester with 7:52 left in the third. Later in the frame, the Engineers were up by three before Davey knocked down a triple for the 41-41 tie heading into the fourth. The Crimson and Gray held a four-point advantage with 7:12 to play; however, the scoreboard swung back to Emerson thanks to a triple by Clydesdale and a traditional three-point play by Boyle. WPI pulled within a pair twice but Emerson canned four of six free throws down the stretch.
WPI outrebounded Emerson 35-29 and held a slim 12-9 edge in second chance points and 17-15 in points from the bench.
The Engineers host Babson at 3pm and the Lions travel to Mount Holyoke for a 1pm start.
