Cortland Women Drop 71-58 Decision at Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Taylor Durnin scored 23 points, including two 3-pointers during a crucial 9-0 run in the third quarter, as Plattsburgh defeated visiting Cortland, 71-58, in SUNYAC women's basketball action.

Cortland suffered its first SUNYAC loss since Jan. 15 and is now 11-10 overall and 7-7 in the conference. Plattsburgh improved to 9-13 overall and 6-9 in the SUNYAC.  Cortland is in a virtual tie fourth for place with Fredonia (8-8) in the league standings with four games remaining for the Red Dragons and two for the Blue Devils.

Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) led Cortland with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals. She was 4-for-7 from the floor with two 3-pointers and hit all four of her free throws. Tanna Mohammed (Huntington/Elwood-John H. Glenn) finished with 10 points and Meghan Flanagan (Rochester/Brighton) and Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) scored eight points each. Alaina Lynch (Staten Island/Staten Island Tech) tied her career high with six rebounds and Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) also pulled down six boards.

Durnin went 6-for-13 from the floor, 3-of-8 from the arc, and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe for the Cardinals. Kayla Doody added 13 points, including 8-of-9 from the foul line, and dished out three assists. Ly'rell Walker scored 12 points and Taylor Clare finished with six points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots.

The teams were tied 14-14 after one quarter and the Cardinals took a 35-30 lead into the halftime break. The margin quickly grew to eight on a Doody 3-pointer, but Cortland got back to within 39-37 with 7:36 left in the third. Durnin hit a 3-pointer at the 6:28 mark, Walker made a layup 24 seconds later, and Durning buried another triple with 5:31 on the clock to give Plattsburgh a 47-37 lead. The 9-0 run concluded on Walker's free throw with 4:23 left. Plattsburgh led 52-41 after three quarters and held at least a nine-point lead the entire fourth quarter.

Plattsburgh shot 40 percent from the field and 78 percent (28-of-36) from the foul line. Cortland ended  at 29 percent from the field and 52 percent (12-of-23) from the foul line.

Cortland will play at Potsdam Saturday at 2 p.m.
