Five Players Score Double Figures Against La Verne

LOS ANGELES — All five Oxy starters finished in double figures and the Occidental women's basketball team played La Verne tough, but the Tigers couldn't overcome an exceptional 48-point effort by Monica Garcia Silva.

Oxy fell 93-84 at Rush Gym on Wednesday night.

Alyssa Ramlochan had 20 points, 15 rebounds and four steals, and Taylor Yoshida had 16 points and six rebounds for the Tigers. Emily Leonard scored 14 points, Mallory North had 12 and Madison Toy added 11 points. Raveena Dhiman scored eight points off the bench.

Garcia Silva was unstoppable despite whatever Oxy threw at her, going 19 for 32 from the field and 10 for 13 from the free throw line. She also had 18 rebounds and six assists.

"I'm proud of our heart and fight. Alyssa and Taylor were particularly solid for us and La Verne has a special player in Silva," Oxy head coach Anahit Aladzhanyan said. "We threw different defenders at her and tried different schemes, but she was highly effective still."

Former Oxy women's basketball star and SCIAC Player of the Year Mackenzie Brandon '12 holds the SCIAC record for points in a game with 54, coincidentally against La Verne in January of 2013.

Jazzlyn Johnson added 20 points for the Leopards.

Oxy led by one point at halftime and the game was tied entering the fourth quarter. The Leopards separated themselves with a 9-2 run around the 5-minute mark in the fourth quarter.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 5-4 overall and 0-2 in SCIAC.

La Verne improves to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC.

Next Game: Oxy is back in action on Dec. 18, playing Sul Ross St. at home in non-conference action.
