KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Four players scored in double figures as the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team overcame a halftime deficit en route to a 64-57 win over Keuka College on Tuesday night inside Main Gymnasium. With the win, Fisher improved to 4-2 on the season while the Wolves finished the night at 2-2 overall.
Freshman Leah Koonmen led the way for the Cardinals with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Erin Hulbert stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, five boards and four dimes while Elle Lazore added a career-high 14 points in 34 minutes. Mallory Wood chipped in with 10 points and collected five rebounds in the win.
After heading into the locker room at halftime trailing the host Wolves by six points, 30-24, the Cardinals responded in signature fashion in the third after outscoring Keuka, 22-16, in the period. As the quarter began, the Wolves' lead would grow to eight points before a pair of free throws by Koonmen sparked a modest 5-0 run by Fisher to cut the deficit to three points. From there, Keuka would push its advantage back to seven points, but seemed to run out of gas as the Cardinals caught fire from behind the arc with five 3-pointers over a span of three minutes to open up a 46-41 advantage. Keuka found its footing as the quarter wore down and connected on a 3-pointer of its own to close out the frame with five straight points to send both teams into the fourth tied at 46-46.
As the fourth quarter commenced, Miranda Lynch penetrated and dumped it off to Wood for two points to give the Cardinals a one-possession lead. The advantage would change hands two more times until another lay-up from Wood put Fisher ahead for good as the Cardinals used an 8-2 run to hold a 58-54 lead with nearly six minutes gone by.
The Wolves would cut the Cardinals' lead to one, but were unable to come up with timely stops on the defensive end of the floor as Fisher closed out the game with six unanswered points to snap a two-game skid.
As a team, Fisher forced Keuka in to 19 turnovers and scored 24 points in the paint overall.
Fisher will continue its play on the road at 6 p.m. on Friday when it travels to Alfred to take on the Alfred State Pioneers in another non-conference pairing.
