Early Lead, Fourth Quarter Surge Sends WPI Past Nichols

WORCESTER – Junior Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) posted a double-double, including a new career-high in rebounds, and senior Alyssa Paul (Schaghticoke, NY) tied her career-high in points as the WPI women's basketball team defeated visiting Nichols, 54-25, Tuesday night in Harrington Auditorium.

Vinson scored 11 and pulled down 10 rebounds while Paul netted a game-best 12 points on the night. Sophomore Maddie Blake (Bedford, NH) added a career-bests of 11 rebounds and four assists in the victory. Junior Alana Keating (Leominster, MA) and freshman McKenna Finken (Simsbury, CT) chipped in with eight points apiece.

Junior Jessica Larsh (Bolton, CT) paced the Bison with eight points. Senior Rebecca Cleary (Milford, NH) scored six points and hauled in a team-high six rebounds. Mekaela Fithian-Giantonio (Plainville, CT) and sophomore Isabella Nerney (Guilford, CT) each contributed five points while Ciarri Formby-Lavertu (Mont Vernon, NH) totaled five boards.

Paul scored the first eight WPI points of the game for an 8-3 advantage halfway through the first. The Engineers carried an 11-point advantage into the second quarter where both teams scored 10 for the 27-16 margin at the half. Nerney accounted for half of the Bison output and Vinson had four for WPI. The third was 10-9 in favor of the Crimson and Gray, who went on to score all 17 points in the fourth.

WPI held large margins off the bench (26-1), in the paint (20-4), off turnovers (20-5) and second chance points (16-3).

The Engineers (4-1) return to action Wednesday, November 28 with a 7pm NEWMAC opener at Wheaton. The Bison (1-3) host Anna Maria on Monday at 7pm.
