LAS VEGAS, Nev. (December 28, 2017) - UW-Stout took a brief lead over sixth-ranked Trine University to start the fourth quarter, but the Thunder recaptured the lead and went on to a 52-46 win at the D3Hoops.com Classic at South Point Arena Thursday.
The Blue Devils (6-4) rebounded from a five point, 23-18, halftime deficit to outscore Trine 13-9 in the third stanza and trailed 32-31 heading into the final period.
Amber Fabeck hit a 3-pointer to give Stout a 34-32 lead. Trine (11-0) outscored Stout 20-15 in the final quarter and held as much as a 12 point lead. The Blue Devils hit only 2 of 11 shots in the fourth quarter, but made up considerable ground at the free throw line, draining 10 of 15 charity shots in the period.
Senior guard Haley Seifert scored 10 points, one less than her career-best, to lead Stout. Kyncaide Diedrich and Fabeck each contributed nine points. Fabeck also had nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Bailey Diersen finished with eight.
Stout shot 25.9 percent (15-58) from the floor for the game, connecting on 3 of 16 3-pointers and finished 13 of 24 from the line.
Trine's Haley Martin scored 21 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and had five blocked shots to lead all players. The Thunder got 11 points from Katy Steers.
The Thunder shot 41.3 percent (19-46) from the floor and were 3 of 7 from 3-point range. They made 12 of 15 free throws. Trine out-rebounded Stout, 40-37, giving up few second chance shots, collecting 37 defensive rebounds.
Stout returns to action in Las Vegas Saturday, Dec. 30 when they face Occidental College at 2 p.m. (Central Time).
