Sewanee completes season sweep of Rhodes with a 95-91 double overtime win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Feb. 12, 2017) – Led by 32 points from Bella Taylor and four other players with at least 12 points, the Sewanee women's basketball team completed a season sweep of rival Rhodes with a 95-91 victory, Sunday, inside Mallory Gymnasium.

The Tigers improved to 9-14 overall and 6-7 in league action. Sunday marked the first season sweep for the Tigers against Rhodes since 2000-01.

Overall, the game featured eight ties and four lead changes. After a close first two quarters, Rhodes took its largest lead after a jumper from Jessie Ustick, a free throw from Anna Muller, and another jumper from Blaire Smith.

Down eight heading into the final quarter of regulation, Sewanee responded. The Tigers opened the fourth quarter on an 11-7 run.

Sewanee took its first lead of the fourth after 10 straight points from Taylor. In fact, after the Sparta, Tenn., native made a layup with 1:36 left, the Tigers led by one, 66-65. From there, Hannah McCormack hit a layup before Rhodes scored the final three points with less than 49 seconds remaining.

After both teams scored nine points in the first overtime, Sewanee took control over the first four minutes of the second OT. A layup by Corey Caulder sparked an 8-2 run which gave Sewanee a seven-point lead, 88-81, with 1:04 left.

From there, the Tigers sealed the win with key free throws from Taylor and Sue Kim.

Overall, Sewanee made 38.7 percent of its attempts. Rhodes made 44.9 percent of its shots but was undone by 16 turnovers.

Along with Taylor, Kim finished with 15 point and nine assists. Additionally, Caulder, Savannah Rose, and McCormack all pitched in 12 points.

Allie Young led Rhodes with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Bailey Kramer also finished with a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Additionally, Blaire Smith added 17 points and seven assists for the Lynx.

Sewanee returns to action with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Centre, Saturday.
