WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team outscored rival New York University 20-2 over the first eight minutes of the contest and never looked back as the Judges defeated the Violets, 57-43, in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams. Brandeis improves to 9-3 on the season, 1-0 in the UAA, while NYU, ranked No. 20 in Division III by the WBCA, falls to 9-2, 0-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brandeis led from the get-go, hitting their first nine shots, while the visitors made just one of their first 12.
- The Judges went ahead 20-2 at the 1:47 mark thanks to senior guard Frankie Pinto's (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) second 3-pointer of the stanza.
- NYU scored the last five points of the period to make the score 20-7 after one.
- The rest of the contest was evenly played, with Brandeis edging NYU, 14-13, in the second quarter, and the third and fourth tied at 6-6 and 17-17, respectively.
FOR THE JUDGES
- Three Brandeis players scored in double figures, led by Pinto, who had 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first half, when she hit 4-of-6 overall and 4-of-5 from downtown.
- Senior forwards Maria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) and Sydney Sodine (New York, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) combined for 20 points and 13 rebounds. Each scored 10 points, and Jackson had a game-high seven while Sodine had six rebounds.
- Jackson also had three assists, three steals and two blocked shots.
- Sisters Paris Hodges and Noel Hodges (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) each had four assists to lead the Judges. Paris added nine points and five rebounds.
- Senior guard Kyla Gabriel (Tivoli, N.Y./Red Hook) also had a season-high six points on two key 3-pointers in the second half that helped keep the Brandeis advantage in double digits.
FOR THE VIOLETS
- Rookie Shaye McGoey (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) led NYU with 13 points, hitting 4-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line. She also had a game-high eight assists.
- Senior Amy Harioka (Danville, Calif./Carondelet) had nine points, but no other New York player had more than six.
- Junior Cassidy Fontana (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) led the Violets with six rebounds and four steals.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Gabriel's six points paced the Brandeis bench to a 12-3 scoring advantage on NYU.
- The Judges outshot the Violets 54% (15-28) to 21% (6-29) in the first half, including 69% (9-13) to 13% (2-15) in the first quarter.
- Brandeis held NYU 27 points below their season scoring average of 70.6 points per game and 12 points below their previous lowest scoring total of the season.
- The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Judges in the series. It was their first since the 2013 season.

- Brandeis takes on 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon next Friday evening at 6 p.m. in another UAA showdown.
