New Paltz Women’s Basketball Falls at NYU 70-60 in Non-Conference Action

MANHATTAN, N.Y. – Three players finished in double-figures for the women's basketball team at the State University of New York at New Paltz on Tuesday night against host NYU, but the Hawks fell to the Violets 70-60 in non-conference play.

New Paltz (3-2) will now enter SUNYAC play this weekend, traveling to SUNY Geneseo and Brockport on Dec. 2-3.

Sophomore guard Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Ursuline School) led the offense with 14 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Senior guard/forward Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) chipped in 12 points, four boards and three steals but was hampered by foul trouble.

Senior forward Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) contributed 10 points and seven boards while classmate Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

For the Violets (5-0), Kaitlyn Read poured in a game-high 22 points to go along with 14 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Shaye McGoey chipped in 11 points off the bench while Amy Harioka contributed 10 points.

The Hawks fell behind after one quarter of action, 23-19, and trailed 42-34 at intermission. New Paltz won the third quarter, 10-7, and entered the fourth stanza behind by just five points, 49-44.

Freshman guard Sandi Harris (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) knocked down a layup to bring New Paltz within three (49-46) and jumpers by Irby and Roessler brought the Hawks closer (53-51) with just under six minutes to play. However, a 12-4 run by the Violets down the stretch put the game out of reach for the visiting Hawks.
