LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 27, 2016) – Despite three players in double figures, the Sewanee women's basketball team fell just short against Ferrum, Sunday, as the Tigers dropped a 73-55 contest to close out the Transylvania Thanksgiving Classic.

The loss snapped the Tigers' two-game winning streak, as Sewanee is now 2-3 overall early this season. Sewanee now has two games left on its seven-game road trip to start the 2016-17 season.

After a field goal from Sue Kim gave Sewanee a 7-6 lead, Ferrum started to roll. The Panthers scored 18 of the next 20 points to end the first quarter. That gave Ferrum a 15-point lead, 24-9, to start the second quarter.

Down, but not out, Sewanee kept fighting. Eight quick points by Savannah Rose cut the Ferrum lead to 11, 28-11. After a Bella Taylor jumper, senior Haley Lyerly made a three and then hit a layup. That eventually helped Sewanee cut its deficit to six, 35-29, with 2:00 left before halftime.

Ferrum answered back with a jumper from Kelli Mounce and a layup from Erin March. The Panthers led by seven, 41-34, at halftime.

Unfortunately, Ferrum slowly pulled away in the second half. The Panthers outscored the Tigers 23-17 in the third quarter and 9-4 in the final 10 minutes.

As a team, Sewanee was undone by its lowest shooting percentage of the season. The Tigers made only 33.3 percent of their attempts.

Individually, Taylor again led Sewanee with 15 points, six assists, and two steals. She was joined in double figures by Corey Caulder and Rose, who each had 12 points.

Forward Zarkia Mattox led Ferrum with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Center Erin March also had 12 points for the Panthers while Kelli Mounce finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Sewanee returns to action with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Emory, Tuesday.
