Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team defeated Yeshiva University, 59-45, on Tuesday evening at the Danzi Center. The Golden Eagles are now 6-12 (3-6 Skyline) on the year as Yeshiva drops to 0-14 (0-9 Skyline).
Andrea Iavarone led the charge for the Golden Eagles scoring 14 points and recording 11 rebounds in her route to her 12th double-double of the year.
SJC started the first quarter with a 13-3 run into the fifth minute of action. After an layup by Asia Rountree, the Maccabees closed out the quarter with two made jumpers to trail SJC 17-9.
In the second quarter, the Golden Eagles held Yeshiva to just three points, as the Maccabees went 1-for-12 on the field. Rountree shot a perfect 2-for-2 from the field. The Golden Eagles took a 35-12 lead into halftime.
Yeshiva broke out the scoring in the third quarter, going 3-for-4 in the first three minutes to trail 20-38. Julia Owen was the lead scorer for the Maccabees (10 pts) in the quarter, as she shot 4-for-5 on the field including two three-pointers. However, the Golden Eagles still had the 47-30 lead.
The Maccabees closed the deficit by as little as 14 points, before Jackie Zizzo extend SJC's lead back to 17, (52-35) after a made three ball. The Golden Eagles were able to regain momentum hitting four free throws to further extend their lead 59-41. Yeshiva would end the game with a 4-0 run as the Golden Eagles ran away with the 59-45 win.
Rountree finished the night shooting 50% from the field scoring eight points and pulling down three rebounds. She was also effective defensively as she had a game-high in steal with 5.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Albany, NY to take on the Sage Colleges Gators at 1:00 PM on Saturday January 30.
