League leading Union defeats William Smith, 59-43

SCHENECTADY, NY – Abby Katz scored 16 and Amy Fisher tallied 15 as the Union College women's basketball team remained in first place in the Liberty League with a 53-43 home win over William Smith College at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night.

The Dutchwomen are now 8-2 in the league and 13-4 overall, while the Herons stand 4-4 in league play and 6-10 for the season.

Erin Lyons had 10 points and Katz, Fisher and Sophie Borg led a balanced rebounding attack with five each. Union forced 23 Heron turnovers and shot 35%, holding William Smith to 27% shooting. Union has won eight of 10.

Melanie Patterson led the Herons with 11 points and Gabrielle Eure had a game high 14 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive side, along with eight points. Kendra Quinn-Moultrie had eight points and the Herons had a 39-38 rebounding advantage.

Union led 14-12 after the first quarter and 25-22 at halftime. It was a one point game at 27-26 with 8:25 left in the third, and Union went on a 14-3 run for a 41-29 lead with 3:49 to play, the largest lead of the third quarter. Katz had six points in that Union run. It was 47-36 after three quarters.

The Herons got to within nine with 7:46 left in the fourth after two free throws by Quinn-Moultrie made it 47-38. But Union's Cailin Schmeer hit a three with 7:00 left for a 14 point lead and Union never trailed by less then 11 the rest of the contest.

Union is idle until Monday, February 1, when the Dutchwomen host The Sage Colleges in a non-league game at 7 p.m.
