CLAREMONT — Ciara Byrne scored 12 points and Erin Matsumoto chipped in 11, along with six rebounds and four steals, but the Occidental women's basketball team was edged at Pomona-Pitzer, 48-44 on Saturday.
Triana Anderson added eight points off of the bench for Oxy.
The Tigers struggled from the field, shooting just 27 percent for the game.
Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 6-11 overall and 2-6 with one round of the 16-game SCIAC schedule in the books.
The Sagehens improve to 7-9 and 4-3.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by Alaina Woo and Basha Brulee-Wills, who both scored nine points.
The Sagehens outscored Oxy 15-6 in the second quarter and then opened the third quarter with a 6-2 run to extend a 10-point lead.
In the fourth quarter, Matsumoto hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 37 and then after teammateMidori McElwee added a 3-pointer of her own, she hit another jumper to put the Tigers up 42-37 with 4:52 to play. From that point on though, the Tigers went 0 for 8 to finish the game as Pomona-Pitzer slowly recaptured the lead.
The Tigers are back in action against La Verne on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Rush Gymnasium.
