PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The No. 14 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team led from start to finish to earn head coach Shirley Egner's 500th career victory with a 67-48 road win over UW-Platteville on Wednesday evening at Bo Ryan Court.
Joann Wolfenberg and Lexi Roland each had season-high point totals for UW-Stevens Point (12-2, 3-0 WIAC), which earned its ninth consecutive victory. The win made Egner the 17th Division III women's basketball head coach with 500 career wins, as she now boasts a career record of 500-214 (.700).
Wolfenberg registered her second-career double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pointers, while Roland pitched in a career-high 15 points on 6-for-9 from the field with a pair of three-pointers.
Wolfenberg and Roland keyed an 11-2 start to the game for UW-Stevens Point, scoring four points each. Wolfenberg scored the first four, followed by a Lauren Anklam three, and Roland added the final four points in the quick start for the Pointers.
The Pointers led by at least five for the remainder of the first half and took a 32-21 lead into the break after layups by Wolfenberg and Payton Mix accounted for the final four points of the half. Wolfenberg and Roland combined for 19 of UW-Stevens Point's 32 first-half points.
The Pioneers cut into the Pointers lead early in the third quarter, getting within four at 35-31 with 7:20 remaining in the frame but that is as close as the hosts would get the rest of the way. UW-Stevens Point used a 14-4 run to open up a 49-35 lead after a Roland layup in the final minute of the third and led by 12 after three.
UW-Stevens Point led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter to see out the win. The Pointers shot 38.1 percent (24-for-63) from the field in the game but committed just nine turnovers, their second-lowest total of the season.
The Pointers also held a 41-31 advantage in rebounding and turned 17 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points. UW-Stevens Point's defense forced UW-Platteville into 18 turnovers, leading to 21 points for the visitors.
Elisa Bilderback led UW-Platteville with 14 points, while Allison Prestegaard had nine points, seven rebounds and five blocks. The Pioneers shot 44.0 percent (22-for-50) but missed all seven of their three-point attempts in the game.
UW-Stevens Point looks for its fifth win over a ranked team this season in a road test at No. 20 UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m at Kolf Sports Center.
