GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College Basketball Head Coach Lindsay Sharman recently announced that Seraphine Hamilton '06 will join her coaching staff next season. Hamilton replaces Gabrielle Guynan, who recently accepted a basketball head coaching position at a Pennsylvania high school.
"Seraphine's athletic accomplishments and strong leadership abilities as a Heron student-athlete, combined with her vast experience working in athletics make her an excellent addition to our coaching staff," Sharman said. "Her core values of discipline, accountability, and respect are congruent with the values of William Smith athletics, and she'll be an exceptional role model for our student-athletes."
Hamilton graduated in 2006 from William Smith with honors, earning a bachelor's degree in English and Africana studies. She earned a master's degree in African studies from Yale University in 2010.
Since 2010, Hamilton was worked at St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware. She has taught English classes at the ninth, 10th, and 12th grade levels, while also serving as the head coach of the varsity girls' basketball and soccer teams. Hamilton guided the Saints' basketball team to a 53-31 record and four consecutive state tournament berths.
Before enrolling at Yale, Hamilton spent two years as a teacher and coach at Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey. She taught 12th grade English and served as a Dorm Parent at the school. Hamilton also coached junior varsity field hockey, varsity basketball, and varsity soccer for the Falcons.
In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Hamilton spent the past year as the boys' athletic director at St. Andrew's. She scheduled games, transportation, and officials for all St. Andrew's boys' sports and ensured compliance with all Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association rules. Hamilton served as an assistant athletic director during the 2012-13 academic year.
As a student at William Smith, Hamilton was a two-sport athlete, excelling in basketball and soccer. Her athletic accomplishments as well her work in the classroom and in the community earned her the 2004 Hazel Nettleship Hardy '65 Award, the 2005 Susan Bassett Award, and the 2006 Marion Harrison Greene '20 Award.
On the hardwood, Hamilton helped the Herons to a 64-42 record, including back-to-back 20-win seasons. She started 53 of the 83 games she played in, averaging 4.2 ppg and 4.3 rpg. A tough defender and a deft passer, Hamilton also recorded 1.3 spg and 1.2 apg. She was a part of two Liberty League Championship teams, helping the 2005-06 squad to a 22-6 record and a spot in the NCAA tournament second round.
On the pitch, Hamilton was a two-time All-American defender, leading the Herons to a 60-15-9 record. She also led the Herons to a pair of NCAA soccer tournament appearances. William Smith posted a 17-4-3 record in Hamilton's first season, reaching the NCAA semifinals. She recorded a career-high four points (2g,1a) as a sophomore, helping the Herons capture the ECAC Upstate Tournament Championship. William Smith returned to the NCAA tournament during Hamilton's senior season, finishing the campaign with a 15-2-1 record.
"Seraphine played an integral part in creating a winning culture within the basketball program, propelling us to three straight postseason appearances, including back-to-back NCAA tournament bids," Sharman said. "We look forward to welcoming her back to the nest."
