The University of Dallas announced Friday that Greta Grothe has been named head coach of the women's basketball Team. She inherits a squad that is coming off a 14-12 season, 7-7 SCAC. The Lady Crusaders notched the No. 5-seed and were eliminated in the SCAC Quarterfinals to No. 4-seeded Schreiner.
Grothe replaces Jina Johansen, who resigned in April to take over the Hastings College program. Johansen, at 63-69, is the winningest coach in program history.
Grothe arrives at the helm of the Dallas women's basketball program after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Rhodes. With the Lynx, Grothe enhanced a successful program that reflected a 45-13 display that won the Southern Athletic Association tournament in both seasons she was there.
In the most recent campaign, Grothe assisted a team that went 20-9 and 8-6 in conference en route to its second consecutive SAA tournament championship. RC fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament to UT-Dallas.
Rhodes also won the SAA title Grothe's first year after the squad shattered a school-best 25-4 record, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team fell 77-74 in a tightly contested battle with UT-Tyler.
Prior to Rhodes, Grothe served as a graduate assistant for two years at NAIA D-I Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. During the 2012-2013 campaign the Lady Wildcats won 20 games, Wildcats finished third in the Heart of America Conference and made it to the second round of the conference tournament before falling to the eventual champion. At Baker, Grothe's duties included recruiting, developing player skills, and aiding the head coach with in-game and practice management.
Prior to Baker, Grothe served as an assistant coach for four years at Fontbonne. During the 2009-10 season, Fontbonne went 18-10, won the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, and qualified for the Division III NCAA Tournament.
Grothe received her undergraduate degree in 2005 from Rockhurst. In 2013, she completed her masters from Baker.
