SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 11, 2015) – Led by five players in double figures, the Sewanee women's basketball team hammered Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern Sunday, 71-53, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
Sewanee improved to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Forward Casey Hassett finished with 18 points and eight rebounds while Jamie Chauvin added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Additionally, Hannah McCormack and Rebekah Faulkner both finished with 11 points while Kayla Sewell added 10 points, 13 rebounds, six blocks, and five assists.
The game was never in doubt for the Tigers, as Sewanee opened a 10-point lead by the 7:15 mark in the first half. A jumper and three by Chauvin, followed by a three by Sewell, stretched the Tigers' advantage to 17 less than a two minutes later.
After a jumper by BSC's Kayla Ford the Tigers kept rolling. A jumper by Chauvin sparked a 6-2 run to close the first half.
In the final 20 minutes, the Panthers never threatened as Sewanee built its advantage to as much as 26 with 9:12 to play.
Overall, Sewanee made 43.9 percent of its attempts while limiting BSC to only a 25.0 field goal percentage.
Guard Jasmynn Batts led all scorers for BSC with a game-high 21 points.
Sewanee opens a four-game road trip at Welch, Tuesday. That contest is scheduled to tipoff at 5:00 p.m.
