St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University women's basketball and new head coach Maureen Sias grabbed their first victory of the season with a 98-87 win over St. Mary of the Woods College (Ind.). The Griffins are now 1-1 on the season.
Sophomore Chelsy Gibson was everywhere, recording 34 points and 15 rebounds in the first double-double of her career. The 34 points are Fontbonne's fourth highest points in a single game while her 14 buckets are tied for the school record in field goals made. Gibson is the fifth Griffin to score more than 30 points in a single game. Eleven of her 15 rebounds were defensive.
As a team, the Griffins connected on 38 field goals, also tieing a school record.
The game was tight, with five ties and eight lead changes. At halftime, the Griffins led 44-34 and maintained that lead throughout the second half, with their biggest lead (21 points) with 8:06 left to play.
After struggling in shooting during their first game of the season, Fontbonne shot 50.0% from the field overall, were 55.5% from three-point range and 68.0% from the free throw line.The Griffins scored 56 of their points in the paint and fought hard throughout the game, recording 31 fouls while the Pomeroys' recorded 17 fouls.
Emily Haring narrowly missed a double-double, performing well on the afternoon. Haring scored 11 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists for the Griffins. Olivia Hollander also scored 11 points while bringing in 7 rebounds. Nicole Joerger and Erika Kuhn each recorded 10 points. Joerger added four assists and two steals as she went 2-4 from three-point range. Eight of Kuhn's points were the the charity stripe.
Fontbonne will get to play at home this Saturday, November 29th in their 2014-15 home opener. The Griffins host Knox College for a 3pm game start.
