W&L Rallies for 67-62 OT Win over LC Women

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Washington & Lee University women's basketball team scored as time expired to force overtime and went on to defeat Lynchburg College 67-62 Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match.

W&L led 25-24 at the half, holding LC to just 30 percent shooting from the floor (11-37). The Generals opened a six-point advantage at 49-43 with under eight minutes to play. The LC defense allowed just two points in the next 5:38 during a 13-2 run to take a 56-51 lead with two minutes left.  W&L cut the edge to two in the closing seconds, and forced a Hornet turnover with four ticks left. The in-bounds pass went to Annie Gauf, who found Jackie Clifford streaking down the sideline and behind the Lynchburg defense for a lay-up as time expired.

The Generals took advantage of poor Hornet free-throw shooting in the five-minute extra session to take control of the game. Lynchburg made just 2-of-5 from the charity stripe, including two front ends of 1-and-1 situations. Washington & Lee converted seven of their nine free throws in overtime to seal the game.

Junior Lauren Penley tallied a team-high 14 points and grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds, nine on the offensive end. Senior Ann Dorris had 12 points, while Charmaine Hairston and Jaimie Grace each tallied 10 points and combined for 10 boards. Chaney Forbush posted nine points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Lynchburg shot 29 percent (25-78) from the floor for the game and 11 percent (1-9) from three-point range.

Gauf paced W&L (6-15/4-9 ODAC) with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Shelbi Hendricks posted 14 points, six rebounds and three steals and Wesleigh Vick had 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Hornets (14-9/11-3 ODAC) travel to Randolph College Tuesday for another ODAC game at 7 p.m.
