ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — It was Alzheimer's Awareness Day at Thompson Gymnasium for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's Commonwealth Conference tilt against Lycoming Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays, clad in special edition purple jerseys, held the Warriors to less than 25 percent shooting for the game as they defeated their visitors, 56-46. Taylor Kreider led the way offensively with 17 points.

Ali Derr, fresh off a 23-point performance this past Wednesday against Albright, started Lycoming (7-9, 4-6 CC) off by scoring the first six points of the game to put the Warriors up quickly 6-0, forcing Elizabethtown (14-2, 8-2 CC) into an early timeout.

Kreider and Kendra Beittel brought E-town back to within a point at 6-5, but a Julia Antonelli layup and Olivia Manges three-pointer ran the score back up to a six-point advantage for Lyco with 11:19 to go in the first half.

After another Derr layup, the Jays used an 8-0 run over two and a half minutes to jump back in front, 17-13. Kreider had seven of the eight points during that spurt, and scored 13 of her game-high 17 in the first half.

Meanwhile, defensively, E-town began to impose itself upon the game. Lycoming was held to six points over the final seven minutes of the opening half, in which they shot just 8-for-29 (27.6%). EC led at the break, 21-19.

The Warriors began the half shooting 2-for-10 from the floor, while the Jays continued to build up the lead. By 12:16 of the second half, the advantage rested at nine, 33-24.

Elizabethtown held Lycoming to seven points in the first 11:03 of the final half. Nikki Thompson's trey pushed the lead to the largest of the game for EC at 15 (41-26). It was shortly thereafter that Kreider picked up her fourth foul of the game and had to be subbed out. Taylor Alwine was also in foul trouble, so the depth of the Blue Jays was being tested.

Krissy Pennell, Emily Martin, Emily Young, and Thompson combined for 16 second-half points to help E-town maintain its lead.

The Warriors used the Jays' foul trouble to pull back into the game. Lyco made 15 free throws in the second half and got as close as four points (47-43) with just two minutes remaining. They were 6-of-28 from the floor in the final 20 minutes.

Alyssa Aichele found Thompson with 1:27 left, and she drained her second three of the half to open the lead back to seven points. Lycoming couldn't recover as Elizabethtown rode out the final minute and a half for the ten-point victory.

Kreider notched her eighth double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 boards. Beittel finished with 14 points, including 7-for-9 from the foul line. Thompson was the leading scorer off the bench with eight (2-for-4 3P). Martin grabbed double-digit rebounds for the second straight game, registering 12 total (three offensive).

The women's basketball team is now within five wins of 1,000 as a program. The drive for five more begins with a tough road test on Wednesday, January 29 in Grantham, Pa. when they travel to face Messiah. Game-time is set for 6 p.m.
