Richardson, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team stormed back from a double-digit halftime deficit and the Cru held on to knock off an American Southwest Conference leader for the second time in the last games in a 71-68 win over U.T.-Dallas Thursday night in Richardson. The UMHB women have now won six straight games to improve to 8-6 overall and 8-3 in the ASC on the year. The loss drops the Comets to 10-2 overall and 7-2 in ASC play on the season.
UMHB built a 10-9 lead midway through the first half before the Comets stretched it out to grab a 34-24 lead at halftime. The UTD lead would grow to 12 points in the second half before the Cru fought back to cut it to 47-43 with 12:51 remaining in the game. The Comets pushed it back to eight points at 59-51 with 8:43 to go, but UMHB answered with an 11-0 run to grab a three-point lead at 62-59 with 5:37 on the clock. The Comets would retake the lead at 67-64 with 2:04 left to play, but Bridjai Chaney tied the game for UMHB with a three-point play. Macy Moore's lay-in gave the Cru a 69-67 lead with 43 seconds to go. Amber Brown hit one of two free throws for the Comets to cut the gap to 69-68, but Alyssa Dean buried two freebies at the other end to put UMHB on top 71-68. Christina Brosnahan's last-second three-point shot was off the mark and Jovana Miles grabbed the rebound for UMHB to clinch the victory.
Miles finished with 18 points to lead the Cru and she added nine rebounds and shot 8-11 from the field. Taylor Tucker added 16 points and 14 rebounds and Dean chipped in 12 points. Chaney also had ten points and eight boards off the bench. UMHB shot 40 percent from the field in the game and out rebounded the Comets 47-34 in the victory.
Jo'Anna Davis had a team-high 14 points off the bench for UTD. Brown and Brosnahan added 13 points apiece and Morgan Kilgore also reached double figures with 10 points. The Comets shot 39 percent from the field and went just 4-13 from three-point range in the game.
The Cru women will close out the week with a 1:00 PM tip-off at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene on Saturday. UMHB will then play road games at Howard Payne and Sul Ross State next week.
