The Hope women's basketball team defeated Kalamazoo 74-55 on Wednesday to remain unbeaten on the season.
The Flying Dutch overcame shooting a season-low 30 percent from the field to improve to 16-0 overall and 7-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.
Hope knocked Kalamazoo (8-6, 4-2 MIAA) out of a second-place tie in the MIAA.
Freshman point guard Angelique Gaddy of Caledonia (Grand Rapids South Christian HS) led Hope with 14 points, including a perfect 12-of-12 effort from the foul line.
"We played well in stretches," Hope coach Brian Morehouse said. "You get a win at home in a league game against a team that was in second place, you feel good about it.
"We got a bye on Saturday. I think it comes at a really good time. We can get better at some things over Thursday and Friday. we can rest on Saturday and Sunday, and make a push.
Senior guard Megan Kelley of Rockford (Rockford HS) contributed her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Seven of her rebounds were part of the Flying Dutch's 23 offensive rebounds and 52 total rebounds.
Senior guard Brittany Berry of Grand Rapids (Catholic Central HS) added 12 points for Hope.
The Flying Dutch's starters combined for 55 points. Junior forward Hannah Doell of Center Valley, Pa. (Southern Lehigh HS) scored nine points, while sophomore forward and reigning MIAA Player of Week Maura McAfee of Midland (Midland HS) had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Senior guard Anna Kaufmann of Davenport, Iowa (Davenport Central HS) chipped in nine points off the bench for Hope.
The Flying Dutch took the lead for good with an 11-0 run midway through the first half that resulted in a 24-17 lead with 7:30 remaining.
"I thought we played with a little more emotion, a little bit more energy," Morehouse said. "I thought our defense stopped them a few times, which I think gave our offense some energy."
"When you're missing shots, everything seems harder. When you knock down a few shots, defense, rebounding — the tough stuff — seems easier."
The Flying Dutch are ranked No. 2 by the USA Today Sports NCAA Division III coaches poll and No. 5 by d3hoops.com.
Hope beat Kalamazoo for a 46th consecutive time. The Flying Dutch lead the all-time series by an 83-5 margin.
