Edgewood College dominates paint, wins third straight

MADISON, Wis. – Just as the weather has started to warm up outside, the Edgewood College women's basketball team heated up the Todd Wehr Edgedome on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles shot a season-best 49.2 percent from the floor in a dominating 74-48 victory over Concordia University Chicago to extend their winning streak to three games. 

Edgewood College (6-9, 6-4 NACC) blitzed the Cougars from the first whistle, opening up an 8-0 run in the first two minutes. Concordia Chicago used three triples to cut their deficit to one at 12-11, but four different Eagles scored consecutive baskets for a 20-11 lead. Two minutes later, the Eagles used a 10-0 run to increase their advantage and with just 2:13 left in the half, Chelsey Watkins hit a jumper which pushed Edgewood College's lead to 20 points. The Eagles shot 58.8 percent in the first half and owned the paint, outscoring the Cougars 32-6.

Edgewood College continued to tack on points while Concordia Chicago (0-13, 0-10 NACC) missed their first seven shots of the second half. At 14:41, the Cougars hit their seventh three-pointer of the game to cut the Eagles' lead to 18, but Zoey Dougherty hit a jumper to push Edgewood College's advantage back to 20 points and Concordia Chicago never gained ground from there on out.

The Eagles dominated the post all night as Dareon Hendersonregistered her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Opposite Henderson, Brooke McBain tallied 14 points and six rebounds and helped Edgewood College post a 44-10 advantage in the paint. Watkins joined the duo in double figures with 14 on 7-for-9 shooting while Allie Novitske dished out a career-high five assists to go along with five points and two rebounds. Edgewood College spread the wealth throughout the whole team as 11 players scored at least a point while the team combined for 22 assists, a season-high.

Edgewood College will next play at Rockford University this coming Wednesday. Tipoff from Seaver Gymnasium will be at 7:00 p.m. with live stats and video available.
