William Smith College senior guard Sasha Borenstein made four 3-pointers. including the 200th of her career during a 73-51 loss to St. John Fisher College in an opening round game of the Wendy's College Classic played in Nazareth's Kidera Gym. She was 4-of-7 from beyond the arc accounting for all 12 of her points.
Just the second Heron to make 200 treys, Borenstein raised her total to 203 in 82 games (2.48/g). Jill Brower '93 is the William Smith record holder with 251 makes in 103 games (2.44/g).
Junior forward Chloe Hayter joined Borenstein in double digits with a team-high 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Jacqueline Murphy and junior forward Molly Breen each added eight boards as the Herons enjoyed a 47-37 advantage on the glass.
The Cardinals' Camaryn Buckner led all scorers with 22 points and a matched Hayter's nine boards. Portia Velasco and Mary Kate Cusack chipped in 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
Seeded fourth, William Smith (1-2) was done in by 22 turnovers against just eight for No. 5 Fisher which translated to a 26-3 edge in points off turnovers for the Cardinals (5-2). Despite finishing minus 10 on the boards, St. John Fisher held an 11-8 lead in second chance points.
After Buckner scored the first bucket of the night, the Herons rattled off nine straight points, including seven from Hayter. The Cardinals reclaimed the lead with a 10-2 run, but Borenstein made her first 3 of the night to put William Smith up 14-12 midway through the first half. The Herons stayed in front over the next four minutes, but Fisher ended the half on a 10-5 run to carry a 32-28 lead into the break.
Borenstein opened the second half scoring with another triple. The Cardinals countered with nine unanswered points to stretch their lead to 10. Murphy made a jumper and Borenstein dialed long distance to cut the Heron deficit in half. Three straight layups by Fisher pushed its lead back into double digits. From that point on, St. John Fisher led by at least nine and as many as 23 to earn its fifth win in its past six games.
William Smith will play eighth-seeded Nazareth in the consolation semifinals on Thursday, Dec. 5 at RIT. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. The Golden Flyers lost to No. 1 seed Roberts Wesleyan 71-51.
