Wurtz Carries NYU to Another UAA Win

Led by a huge performance from Riley Wurtz, the New York University women's basketball team defeated the University of Chicago 67-53 on Sunday, February 17, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
 
Wurtz poured in 23 points, one off her career high, and corralled 17 rebounds to notch her sixth double-double of the season. She added seven assists and four steals to lead the Violets (10-14, 3-10), who completed a weekend sweep of University Athletic Association (UAA) foes Washington University and Chicago for the first time since 2006-07.
 
Highlights
 
- NYU trailed the Maroons (7-17, 3-10) 18-9 midway through the first half before Wurtz began to take over. She scored 11 points over the final seven minutes of the period to help the Violets outscore Chicago 21-8 to end the half.
 
- NYU took a 30-26 lead into halftime when Wurtz fed Maya Wasowicz for a long two just before the buzzer.
 
- The Violets then scored nine of the first 13 points of the second half to open up a 39-30 advantage with 15:35 to play.
 
- A Jenna Lillemoe three cut the Chicago deficit to four at 43-39, but NYU responded with eight straight points, the last four of which came from Cassidy Jourdan, to go up 12. The Maroons got no closer than nine the rest of the way.
 
- Megan Dawe joined Wurtz in double figures with 11 points on 5-6 shooting, as well as five rebounds. Jourdan finished with nine points, while Wasowicz totaled eight points and four assists. Melissa Peng and Alexis Doherty netted six points apiece.
 
- Paige Womack was the lone Maroon in double figures with 11 points as well as four assists. Julie Muguira and Claire Devaney scored nine points each, with Devaney adding 11 boards.
 
"It was a great team effort," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "It was good to see us follow up Friday's win with another. For a young team, that shows a lot of composure and maturity. I was proud of the way we played today."
 
The Violets wrap up the 2012-13 season on Saturday, February 23, when they host rival Brandeis University at Coles. The game begins at 1:00 pm after a pre-game ceremony to honor senior Rachel Crittenden.
