DEFIANCE, Ohio – Madisen Webb converted a layup with 25 seconds to play to post what would become the winning points as Transylvania held off determined Defiance 84-81 in double overtime Saturday in women's Heartland Conference basketball play.
The Pioneers (15-4, 11-1 HCAC) entered play with a two-game edge in the HCAC race. Transy has won seven games in a row. Defiance, one of three teams tied for second coming in, fell to 11-8, 8-4 in league play.
Alex McKenzie (18 points) and Katelyn Smith (17 points) each canned one of two free throws in the final 11 seconds as Transy held on for the win.
Webb finished with a career high 23 points to go with five assists. Nicole Coffman added 20 points and six rebounds. Kayla Dobson had seven rebounds and two points, scoring her only basket on a critical put-back in the second overtime.
Regulation play ended with the score tied 66-66 and Transy had the final shot that would have won it. The two teams scored just four points each in the first overtime, and Defiance had the last shot at that point. Transy led throughout the first 16 minutes of the second half. Defiance caught up at 61-61with 3:54 left in regulation.
The Pioneers scored the first six points of the second extra period and never trailed after that.
Transy used a 14-1 run late in the first half to turn an early nine-point deficit into a 43-32 edge. A made Defiance three ended the half with the Pioneers enjoying a 43-35 cushion.
The Yellow Jackets opened the game with an 11-2 flurry.
Smith had 13 points in the half while Coffman and McKenzie added 10 apiece as Transy shot 55 percent from the field. Erica King led Defiance with 14 points, but no other Yellow Jacket had more than four in the half.
For the game, Transy shot 45 percent to 35 percent for Defiance, who was led in scoring by Megan Zachrich with 22 points and King, who had 20. Transy made 19 of 22 free throws while the Jackets converted 14 of 16. Despite the closeness of the contest, the teams combined to make only 22 turnovers.
Transy is back in action on Wednesday, hosting Earlham in the Beck Center at 7:30 p.m.
