Taylor Jandrin (Jr.-Forestville, Wis.) led six Lakeland College players scoring in double figures and the Muskie women's basketball team defeated Finlandia (Mich.) University 92-61 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Woltzen Gymnasium.
Jandrin scored a season high with 17 points and was perfect from the field and the free throw line. The Muskie guard made all six of her shots from the floor, including three three-pointers, as well as both of her foul shots.
Jandrin helped Lakeland pull through in an entertaining game that saw three-pointers raining in. The teams combined for 24 three-pointers made, including 14 by the Muskies. Eight Lakeland players hit three-pointers in the contest, including three each by Jandrin, Aimee Thrune (Jr.-Prairie du Sac, Wis.) and Paige Papineau (So.-Green Bay, Wis.).
Lakeland (5-8 overall) shot 49.3% from the field for the game, making 34 of 69 shots. The Muskies led almost from start to finish but withstood a second half challenge from the Lions (3-12 overall), finishing the game on a 30-9 run to pull away and snap a three-game losing streak.
Lakeland seemed to be in control after a first half in which it hit nine three-pointers and led by as many as 26 points on the way to a 45-26 lead at the break. Feisty Finlandia came back early in the second half, though, slicing a 24-point lead to 10 when Hailey Gervais hit her fourth three-pointer to make it 62-52 with 13:35 to play. The Muskies slowly pulled away, though, pushing the lead back to 20, and then finished the game on a 15-2 run, holding the Lions scoreless the final 4:53.
Papineau came off the bench to score 13 points and Leah Eisner (Jr.-Stevens Point, Wis.) added 13 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double this season. Becky Mayo (Sr.-Gladstone, Mich.) added another double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Thrune and Natalie Neitzel (Fr.-Theresa, Wis.) both added 11 points each. Neitzel scored all her points in the second half and off the bench in her first game back after missing nearly a month after a concussion.
Marissa Burke scored 14 points to lead Finlandia, while Gervais and Brierra Ruska both added 12 points each. The Lions made 10 of 32 three-point tries but shot just 22-of-66 from the field overall for the game (33.3%). The Muskies also dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Lions 51-30.
Lakeland is in action again tomorrow when it faces Alma (Mich.) College in another non-conference game at 4 p.m. at Woltzen Gymnasium.
