NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team opened its 2012-13 season with a win on Tuesday evening as the Bloodhounds were a 67-46 winner over the College of New Rochelle.
John Jay had three players score in double figures and were led by Victoria Story with a great all-around game of 22 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Fellow teammate Jamecia Forsythe added a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds to go along with five assists and four steals. Tyana Hale chipped in 12 points and had four steals.
John Jay led the entire way with the exception of one possession in the opening minute when CNR led 2-1. The Bloodhounds opened play with a 25-6 run to lead by 19 points midway through the first half.
Early in the second half, CNR pulled to within as little as 11 at one point and were down 33-22 with under a minute gone by in the final stanza. The Blue Angels still were within striking range six minutes later and were down 43-31 with 12:45 to go, before the Bloodhounds went on a 12-0 run to break the game wide open and go up by 24 with 10:13 remaining.
From there the Bloodhounds coasted en route to getting off to a 1-0 start.
The stingy Bloodhound defense forced the host Blue Angels into 42 turnovers. Collectively, John Jay had 23 steals and held a 37-10 advantage on points off turnovers.
CNR was led by Jasmine Brandon with a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds. She also registered four blocks. Ja'Nasha King came off the bench and added 12 points and three rebounds for the Blue Angels.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Nov. 24 for day one of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Invitational at St. John Fisher. The Bloodhounds face the host school at 7 p.m.
