Macalester staged a 15-0 run late in the first half and maintained a double-digit lead throughout most of the second half, and went on to beat Colorado College 66-60 Saturday in Colorado Springs. The Scots bounce back from a loss to Nebraska Wesleyan one day earlier to even their record on the young season to 1-1.
Kyanna Jones (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) had a strong all-around game to lead the way for the Scots, finishing with 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting, five steals, five rebounds and four assists.
Emma Leyden (Jr., Berkeley, Calif. / Head-Royce) joined Jones in double figures with 10 points. Taylor Pike (Jr., Ashland, Neb. / Ashland-Greenwood) scored nine points and Carmen Whitehead (Jr., Greeley, Colo. / West) finished with eight. Grabbing five rebounds each were Kathryn Medinger (Jr., Sitka, Alaska) and Veronika Jakubovie (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.).
Macalester out-shot Colorado College 41% to 35% and made 12 of 14 free throw tries. Mac's defense forced a 24-18 turnover advantage for the Scots. The Tigers led the battle of the boards by a 46-29 margin.
The Tigers (0-2 on the season) were led by Sarah Gunkel and Kalli Kemling with 14 points apiece and Marissa Gradoz with 13.
Macalester trailed 20-23 with 4:28 left in the opening period, but by the 1:50 mark led 35-23 following 15 quick unanswered points. The Scots were up 37-29 at the break. Leading 52-43 midway through the second half, Macalester began a 7-0 run to extend the advantage to 16 points.
The Scots play their home-opener Tuesday (Nov. 20) against Northwestern-Roseville at the Leonard Center at 5:30 p.m.
