Jagodzinski leads Lyons in points with ten, all off of the bench
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wheaton College women's basketball team dropped its 2012-13 season opener to non-conference opponent Roger Williams University, 68-43, on Thursday night at the Campus Rec Center.
Senior forward Jana Jagodzinski (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) led Wheaton in scoring with ten points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, all off of the bench. Sophomore forward Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) added eight points, nine rebounds (five offensive), four assists, two blocks and two steals in 23 minutes.
Freshmen Emily Romans (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and Jorden Mitchell (SouthBerwick, Maine/Marshwood) contributed five points and two rebounds apiece.
For the Hawks, junior guard Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) and sophomore guard Lisa Lutz (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) poured in a game-high 13 points each. Bovee went 6-for-10 from the field including 1-for-2 from beyond the arch and hauled in a team-leading eight rebounds (two offensive) while Lutz was 6-of-9 in shooting on the night with one three-pointer and seven caroms.
Senior forward Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) added 12 points going 5-for-15 from the field and 2-for-4 from the free throw line. Lanieri also had seven boards (three offensive), two assists and a pair of blocks and steals.
Roger Williams compiled 32 points in the paint (22 coming in the second half), 20 points off turnovers, 12 on the fast break and 28 points off the bench. Wheaton tied the hosts in second chance points with ten, received 22 points from its bench and 18 points in the paint.
The Hawks, who never gave up the lead in the contest, used an 11-0 run with the scored tied at 11-11 in the first half to create an eventual 27-18 halftime lead. In the second stanza, Roger Williams extended its cushion with another double-digit run pushing the score to 50-28 with a 23-10 offensive output to begin the half. Bovee spearheaded the Hawks offense during that stretch with seven points while Lanieri and senior guard Abby Marsh (Manchester, Vt./Burr & Burton) canned six points, respectively.
Wheaton (0-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts the Cheryl Warren-Powers Memorial '95 Tournament this weekend as it welcomes Lesley University on Saturday, November 17 at 2 p.m. in Emerson Gymnasium. The Lyons have dedicated their season in memory of Warren-Powers and will wear her initials "CWP" on their sneakers all season long. Warren-Powers played on both the women's basketball and softball teams at Wheaton and was also a standout two-sport athlete in the same sports at Bishop Feehan High School becoming first female athlete to score 1,000 career points for the Shamrocks. Warren-Powers passed away four days after giving birth to twins earlier this year on May 22nd.
