WESTMINSTER (MD) – The Delaware Valley College women's basketball team opened its 2012-13 season with a 78-53 loss to Widener University in the first round of the McDaniel College Tip-Off Tournament.
With the setback, the Aggies will now meet Emory and Henry College in Saturday's consolation game (1:00 p.m.). Emory and Henry dropped a 95-75 decision to the host school in the tournament's first contest.
Widener, coached by former Delaware Valley All-American point guard Alisa Kintner (nee DiBonaventura), jumped out to a quick start by scoring 20 of the game's first 25 points. The Pride led at the break, 48-28, and then opened the second half with 21 consecutive points. They hit 10 shots from 3-point land and forced a young Aggie team (10 of the 12 players on the roster are freshmen or sophomores) into 21 turnovers.
Four Widener players reached double figures in scoring, including Lil Carney's 15 points in 22 minutes. Jennifer Egee added 14 points off the bench while Vanessa Hejnas and Joanna Persiano notched 11 points apiece.
Delaware Valley freshman Eireann Anastasi scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Brenna Coll followed with 10 points and six boards while classmate Shannon Barlow added nine points and six rebounds.
