Brooklyn, NY---Charnelle Saint Laurent took a Melissa St. Louis pass and buried a three-pointer with 2.8 seconds remaining to give Brooklyn a 52-51 victory in Quarterfinal Round of the ECAC Metro Basketball Championship on Wednesday evening at West Quad.
WIth the win, the #4 seeded Bulldogs will advance to take on #1 Rutgers Newark, a 69-59 winner over Lehman, on Saturday at Rutgers Newark. The game will begin at 6 pm with the other semifinal, #3 Richard Stockton to take on #7 Stevens at 8 pm.
The win improved Brooklyn's overall record to 22-7 on the season, while Old Westbury fell to 18-9.
After beginning the game with an 8-0 run, Brooklyn led for much of the game, however a Kim Weathers three-pointer with 10:53 gave the Panthers a 35-34 advantage.
The Bulldogs responded with a bucket from Laurent Plagainos, but Old Westbury's DeAndra Scott socred on her team's next possession to reclaim the lead.
Plagainos once again answered, this time with a three-poniter to put BC up by two, adn then after a Panther turnover, Nicole Francomano scored to give her team a four-point cushion, 41-37.
Old Westbury was able to regroup in a big way as they went on a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 51-45 lead, capped by a Clarissa Gallagher three point basket.
Brooklyn would respond with a St. Louis free throw and a Saint Laurent three-pointer to cut the deficit to two, 51-49, with 1:51 to play.
A Panther turnover on the consequent possession gave Brooklyn a chance to tie or take the lead, but Saint Laurent missed a three and Plagainos could not convert on the putback.
Old Westbury came down and found Gallagher who could not convert on a three pointer. Brooklyn worked the ball into the paint for a short Francomano jumper that came up short, but Tiffany Thompson was there for the offensive rebound, but she could not convert on a layup, giving the Panthers possession with 49 seconds left.
Deslyn Applewhaite missed a shot with 23 seconds left, and BC called their final timeout. After breaking through some Old Westbury pressure, Saint Laurent hit the game winner.
Plagainos led all scorers with 23 points. Francomano chipped in with 13 points, four assists and six rebounds. Saint Laurent finished the game with 11 points and two assists.
Applewhaite led Old Westbury with 18.
