Sewanee, Tenn. – In what has been a memorable 2011-12 season for the Millsaps Majors Women's Basketball Team, the team reached another milestone on Sunday afternoon against Sewanee as they became the third team in the history of the program to achieve 20 wins in a season. The Majors now prepare for the next step, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
Millsaps wasted no time early on as they jumped out to an 18-6 lead thanks to a tremendous defensive effort, which included eight steals during that run with five of them coming from junior Lovie Love.
The Tigers began to protect the ball better and brought the game within six with 5:30 remaining in the first half. However, Millsaps immediately ran their lead back out to 10 thanks to jumpers from Love and sophomore Shatoya White. Millsaps took a 10 points lead into halftime at 32-22.
The Majors continued to extend their lead, but Sewanee would not go away and continuously get the game back down to 10.
Junior Shante Morton, who was in deep foul trouble in the first half, began to get going in the second half as she scored all 10 of her points in the period to extend Millsaps' lead to 15 with 7:06 remaining.
Sewanee was able to cut the score under double digit when the final horn sounded, but it was too little, too late as the Majors took the victory, 55-46.
Love played maybe one of her best games of the season as she scored 17 points while adding seven steals and three assists. Morton added 10 points while senior Janice Okeke picked up nine points, 15 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
The Majors prepare for the SCAC Tournament, which is set to begin on Friday, as they will take on the No. 3 team in the Western Division, Trinity Tigers in Birmingham, Alabama. The Majors defeated Trinity in San Antonio on January 29th, 71-57. The time has not yet been released.
