Macalester topples Hamline on Senior Day

More news about: Macalester

Carried by its seniors, Macalester finished the 2011-2012 campaign with a victory over Hamline 72-67 Saturday afternoon at the Leonard Center. The Scots closed out the season at 12-13 overall and 10-12 in the MIAC for an eighth-place finish in the final standings.

Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) paved the way with 25 points and eight rebounds while teammate Jessica Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) added 20 points, including a 3-5 effort from the three point line.  Rene wraps up her career at Macalester 977 career points, finishing twelfth in school history in that category.

The Scots were propelled by a key 11-0 run to end the first half to take a 38-28 lead into halftime.  Yet a slow start to the second half allowed the Pipers to cut the Mac lead to as few as one.  However, with 7:32 to play, the Scots went on a 7-0 run to take a 61-50 lead and essentially doom the Pipers chances at an upset bid.

Shannon Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial), another senior playing her final game in the Leonard Center, had a solid all-around performance, totaling five points, six rebounds, and five assists.  Maggie Wood (Sr. Oregon, Wis./Madison Edgewood) contributed nine points and four steals.

Steph Pilgrim paced the Pipers with 25 points, and nine rebounds.   She canned 5-of-11 from beyond the arc.  Kara Poirier added 13 to go along with four assists. The Pipers shot 44% from the three point line, allowing them to keep close throughout the entire game.

Seniors Schiedermayer, Wood, and the Rene twins will definitely be missed, but the opportunity is now there for returners such as Kyanna Jones (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo), Emma Leyden (So., Berkeley, Calif./Head-Royce), Taylor Pike (So., Ashland, Neb./ Ashland-Greenwood), Rebekah Keller (So., St. Louis, Mo. / Parkway North) and Kathryn Medinger (So., Sitka, Alaska) to contribute even more next season.
