MENOMONIE (February 15, 2012) - UW-Stout got outshot by 10th ranked UW-Stevens Point, but the young Blue Devils kept up the hustle in a 65-44 loss to the Pointers Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The first-placed Pointers (21-3, 13-2 WIAC) held Stout scoreless for the first three minutes of the game and without a field goal for the first eight minutes. Cassie Bandow led the Pointers scoring attack early, scoring 12 points as the Pointers held a 25-5 lead at 10:25 of the first half.
The Blue Devils (6-18, 2-13 WIAC) did not relent and did cut into the lead, but still trailed, 35-13 at halftime.
The Pointers built to as much as a 30 point lead in the second half, but Stout did make the game interesting, forcing 29 Stevens Point turnovers as the Blue Devils recorded 14 steals. Katelynne Folkers (Fr, Fall Creek) finished the night with five steals and Rachel Hanley (So, Minong) had four steals.
Stout was held to 24.2 percent shooting from the floor, while the Pointers finished the night hitting 51.1 percent of their shots.
The Pointers' Bandow scored a game-high 15 points, all in the first half. Ashley Averkamp and Taylor Bahr added 11 points.
Stout got 11 points from Brea Boomer (Fr, Grand Portage, Minn).
The Blue Devils will close out the season when they travel to UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 18 with a 4 p.m. start.
