Macalester knocks off Gustavus 65-56

More news about: Macalester

Macalester out-scored the MIAC's top offensive team 39-24 in the second half to knock off Gustavus Adolphus 65-56 at the Leonard Center on Pink Zone Day.  The women's basketball team wore pink uniforms for this event, which raised funds for the Kay Yow Foundation to fight breast cancer.

Four Scots reached double figures in scoring, led by Jessica Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) and Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) with 16 points each.  Schiedermayer pulled down 11 rebounds to post her fifth double-double of the season.  She made 4-of-5 shots, making her 13-for-14 over her team's past two games.

The Scots avenge a one-sided defeat to Gustavus a month ago in St. Peter and with three wins in their last four games, improve to 11-12 on the season and 9-11 in the MIAC.  Second-place Gustavus drops to 18-5 overall, 16-4 in MIAC play.

Rene, who now has 953 career points, and Schiedermayer were joined in double figures by Maggie Wood (Sr., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) with 12 points and Kyanna Jones (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) with 10 points.  Shannon Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) handed out four assists and Schiedermayer had three.  Wood led the defense with four of her team's eight steals.

Gustavus went 8-for-20 from three-point territory, but Macalester was successful on 20-of-26 free throw tries.  The Scots led 13-7 in second chance points.

Molly Geske and Abby Rothenbuehler each tallied 12 points to pace the Gusties.  Colleen Ruane dished out four assists.

The Scots have two games to go and are looking to finish with a winning record and .500 conference slate.  Mac plays Wednesday (Feb. 15) at St. Benedict and hosts Hamline Saturday (Feb. 18) on Senior Day.
