NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 10, 2012 – The Husson women's basketball team earned a 79-75 overtime road victory over Colby-Sawyer, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Friday evening.
The Eagles improve to 11-10 overall and 11-3 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer suffers its first home loss of the season and falls to 16-6 overall and 12-3 in conference play.
Kelli Murray (Shawmut, Maine) led Husson with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Brianna Hanscom (Mattawamkeag, Maine) also recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game best 12 boards. Senior Amanda Gifford (Lee, Maine) added 16 points, including 8-8 from the free throw line. Senior Marissa Albert (Fort Kent, Maine) was the fourth Eagle to reach double-figures with 13 points.
Colby-Sawyer was led by Taylor DeSanty's (North Adams, Mass.) game-high 31 points and 10 rebounds. She moved into sixth place on Colby-Sawyer's all-time scoring list with 1137 points. Junior Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) added 17 points, a game-high nine assists and six rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Fruzzetti (Raynham, Mass.) was the third Charger in double-figures with 11 points.
The first half was evenly played throughout, but Colby-Sawyer was able to carry a 41-34 lead into halftime after converting on seven three-pointers. The Chargers led by 13 with less than three minutes to play, but Husson was able to cut the deficit on a pair of Murray buckets. Murray led all players with 16 points in the frame.
The Eagles clawed back in the second by scoring 14 points off of nine Colby-Sawyer second half turnovers. Husson tied the game at 52-52 with 12 minutes to play and the lead changed four times down the stretch. After a pair of DeSanty free throws put the home team up 70-65 with 2:47 left, Husson's Hanscom scored the final five points to send the game to overtime.
The Eagle's defense that held Colby-Sawyer without a field goal for the last three minutes of regulation allowed just one in the overtime session. DeSanty scored four of the Chargers' five points in overtime, while Gifford scored seven of Husson's nine points.
Colby-Sawyer hosts Maine Maritime on Saturday at 1:00 pm, while Husson travels to New England College for a 1:00 pm tip.
