UMHB women roll over Sul Ross 86-61

Belton, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team opened the game with an 11-2 run and the Cru never looked back on the way to a victory over Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB improves to 3-16 overall and 2-13 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. The loss drops the Lobos to 2-17 overall and 1-14 in the ASC on the year.

Cortney Poncik set the tone early for the Cru, hitting three quick three-pointers as UMHB jumped out to an 11-2 lead. Sul Ross battled back to within 22-20 midway through the first half before UMHB pulled away again. The Cru would lead 42-32 at halftime and stretched it out from there in the second half.

Poncik led UMHB with a career-high 22 points and she went 6-6 from three-point range. Brittany Zamora added 10 points off the bench and went over 1,000 points for her career. Jovana Miles also reached double figures with 11 points and she pulled down a team-best seven rebounds. Fourteen different players scored in a balanced attack for UMHB. The Cru shot 43 percent from the field and went 9-23 from three-point range. UMHB also out rebounded Sul Ross State 43-35 in the victory and forced 31 Lobo turnovers.

Krista Ford led all scorers with 29 points for Sul Ross State on 11-15 shooting, Kaitlyn Moody added 10 points off the bench and Michelle Moore had eight assists for the Lobos.

The Cru will now hit the road for a pair of ASC West Division rematches next week. UMHB will take on Howard Payne University in a 5:30 PM tip-off Thursday in Brownwood. The Cru will close out the week with a 1:00 PM start at Sul Ross State next Saturday in Alpine.
