ANDERSON, Ind. - Transylvania's reserves out-scored Anderson 42-15 Saturday, fueling an 80-72 comeback win in women's Heartland Conference basketball play.
The Pioneers are 8-9, 6-4 in HCAC play, while the Ravens drop to 6-11, 3-7 in league action.
After falling behind by as many as 11 points in the first half, Transy rallied in the second period to lead by as many as 11. Jariana Gillespie came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points, including 16 of 21 from the free throw line. She was eight of 10 from the line down the stretch as the Pioneers held off a determined rally by the Ravens that cut their deficit to four with just over three minutes to play.
Elizabeth Thomas scored 10 points off the bench for Transy and Valeria Whitlock and Chelsea Pharriscombined for 11 more. Transy's top scorer was Nicole Coffman, the current HCAC Player of the Week, who pitched in 17. Alex McKenzie led the Pioneers in rebounding with nine.
Transy missed 13 of its first 17 shots from the field and fell behind by as many as 11 points before rallying to within five, 38-33, at intermission. Anderson led 28-17 with 7:26 left in the period and finished the half shooting 50 percent (11 of 22).
The Pioneers, who finished the half by making seven of their last 15 shots, were led by Coffman's 10 points in the period while Gillespie added six .
Transy, which finished the game shooting 42.9 percent overall (including just two of 10 from behind the arc), out-scored the home team 47-34 in the second half while building leads of as many as 11 points. The Pioneers took the lead for good at 51-49 on a lay-up by Terra Lucas mid-way through the second half.
Kate Barwick led Anderson with 19 points as the Ravens connected on 43 percent of their field goal attempts. Transy finished 30 of 47 from the free throw line while the Ravens were 21 of 31. Anderson out-scored the Pioneers 21-6 from behind the arc.
Transy returns to the court on Wednesday, hosting HCAC foe Franklin at 7:30 p.m. at the Beck Center.
