Elizabethtown, Pa. (Jan. 21, 2012) - Alvernia University (7-8, 2-4) shot 18 percent from the floor and less than 50 percent from the free throw line in the second half scoring just 13 points over the final 20 minutes en route to a 72-53 loss at Elizabethtown College Saturday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's baksetball action.
Alvernia hit 44 percent from the floor going 2-for-6 from the arc and 10-for-12 from the free throw line during the opening 20 minutes and built a seven-point halftime lead, 40-33. Senior center Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) led the way hitting 7-of-9 shots and three free throws to post a game-best 17 points at the break.
The second half started with consecutive turnovers then Etown ran off eight straight points to take a 41-40 lead. The Crusaders struggled to find the range missing seven of their first eight shots to start the half while the Blue Jays scored 25 points over the first eight minutes to push out to a 58-46 lead.
The lead grew to 17 points, 70-53 with 4:42 to play and a layup from Etown's Taylor Alwine was the only scoring over nearly the last five minutes.
Altemose added five points in the second half to finish with a game-high 22 points. Etown put four players in double figures led by 17 from Stephanie Ellwood.
The Crusaders return home to play a non-conference game with Immaculata before finishing the first run through the Commonwealth schedule at Messiah on Wednesday.
