UW-Whitewater used first half runs of 22-2 and 19-2 to blow out East Texas Baptist University 75-42 in Austin, Texas Friday.
East Texas led 5-4 at the 18:07 mark, but the Tigers spent the rest of the game using binoculars to see UW-W in the distance. Whitewater followed that short lived deficit with a 22-2 run to lead 26-7 with 9:21 left in the first half. Shortly after, UW-W stomped on the accelerator again, this time with a 19-2 splurge, and the Warhawks entered halftime with a 45-15 lead.
ETBU shot 19% from the field in the first half and committed 16 turnovers. Whitewater was 44% and six in those same categories. Senior forward Chantel Burg had 12 points for the Warhawks, hitting 4-5 from the field and 4-4 from the line.
Whitewater's lead held up through the second half, dipping to 27 twice, 51-24 at 14:29 and 57-30 at 9:44, and expanding to 36 twice, 67-31 at 4:34 and 75-39 with 0:35 remaining.
UW-W shot just 35% for the game, but the Warhawks held the Tigers to 23%, including 1-12 from beyond the arc. UW-W also had an advantage at the line, hitting 24-27 while ETBU was 13-19. Whitewater's free throws attempted and made are second this season only to a 30-44 game against UW-Stout December 3, and the percentage of .889 is second to a .895 (17-19) compiled versus the University of Dubuque November 26. The 42 points ETBU scored is the fewest allowed by Whitewater since a 74-42 defeat of Clarke College November 27, 2010, and the 33 point winning margin is the largest since topping Rockford College 82-35 December 20, 2008. Whitewater was 5-19 from three point range, the second highest total of three point shots attempted this season (24 vs. Eau Claire December 10).
UW-W senior guard Jamie Swanson was the game's leading scorer with 16 points, topping her previous season best of 15 versus UW-Stout December 3. Swanson was 5-8 from the floor, including 2-4 on three's, and 4-4 from the free throw line. Burg wound up with the 12 points, and sophomore guard Kaitlyn Thill scored ten. Twelve Warhawks saw double figure minutes of playing time, sixteen got into the game, and twelve got their name in the scoring column. ETBU was led by junior center Holly Phelps, who led both teams with 12 rebounds while also sharing the Tigers' team lead with six points.
East Texas Baptist is 4-6 this season. ETBU and UW-W participated in a tournament hosted by Concordia University (Texas), with ETBU topping Northland College Thursday and Whitewater defeating host Concordia.
UW-W, 8-4, will play at Edgewood College January 4, then host UW-River Falls January 7 at 4:00 in the Treyton Kilar Kids' Game in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
