Colby-Sawyer Women's Basketball Defeats Thomas, 87-55

NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 9, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures in an 87-55 triumph over Thomas College in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game on Friday evening at the Hogan Sports Center.

The Chargers improve to 7-2 overall and go to 3-0 in the NAC. Thomas falls to 1-7 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

Colby-Sawyer junior Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) led the Chargers with 21 points and seven rebounds. Junior Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) scored 19 points on 7-12 shooting to go along with a game-high seven assists and six rebounds. Bullett now has 255 assists, which ranks her ninth all-time for career assists. Sophomore Ashley Fruzzetti (Raynham, Mass.) added 15 points, while freshman Kelsey Bragdon (Wells, Maine) was the fourth Charger to reach double-figures with 13 points off the bench. Freshman Simone Songue (Yaoundel, Cameroon) added five points and seven rebounds in 14 minutes of action.

The NAC's leading scorer, Karin Bird (Lee, Maine) of Thomas, was held to 4-18 shooting from the field, but scored a game best 25 points as she went 17-19 from the free throw line. Sophomore Elizabeth Goodall (Oakfield, Maine) recorded 10 points. Sophomore Cassie Manning (North Haverhill, N.H.) added eight points and five rebounds for the Terriers.

Colby-Sawyer jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, but saw it quickly evaporate as the Terriers responded with a 9-0 run keyed by a pair of Manning three-pointers and a trey by Ashley Matchett (Skowhegan, Maine). The teams played back and forth action over the next several minutes before Colby-Sawyer went ahead 29-16 half way through the frame. The Terriers tried to chip away, but the Chargers offense finished the half on a 10-2 run to lead 44-24 at the break.

The home team continued momentum into the second half as they held a comfortable lead throughout the final 20 minutes. Thomas cut the deficit to 15 on a couple of occasion, but Colby-Sawyer eventually pushed its advantage to 34 with three minutes left to play.

The Chargers capitalized on 24 Thomas turnovers, which led to 38 points. Colby-Sawyer also controlled the paint with a 32-14 edge in points and 50-33 edge in rebounds.

Colby-Sawyer wraps up the first semester at home on Saturday with a 3:00pm tip against the University of Maine-Farmington. Thomas will travel to New England College for a 3:00pm tip tomorrow.
