Terror Women Trip-Up Devils in Overtime

More news about: Dickinson

(Carlisle, Pa.) – For the second time this season the Dickinson College women's basketball team and McDaniel went into overtime. The Green Terror avenged an overtime loss in December with a 73-60 double-overtime win here on Wednesday night.

The Green Terror jumped out to a strong start, taking a 12-2 lead in the opening six minutes of the game. The Red Devils chipped away at the lead, pulling within a point, 19-18, with 3:21 to play in the half. An Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair Academy) jumper tied the game at the break, 22-22.

It was the Devils who came out strong to start the half after intermission, pulling in front 33-27 with 13:09 on the clock. After McDaniel cut the deficit to 36-31, Dickinson answered with a 6-0 run for its biggest lead of the night, 44-34, with 5:18 remaining in regulation.

The Terror came right back with a 12-2 run, capped by an Allie Eader three-pointer, to pull within one at the 2:17 mark, 44-43. Sophomore Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) and Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) each hit two free throws to stretch the lead to five with just over a minute to play. Cara Thompson scored to make it a one possession game with 50 seconds on the clock.

The Devils missed on the other end, putting the ball in the hands of the Green Terror with Dickinson leading, 48-45. The Devils fouled to avoid a three-point attempt to tie the game. The Devils had fouls to use before putting McDaniel on the line for a one-and-one. Ironically, the officials called a shooting foul with five seconds on the clock, allowing Thompson a chance to tie the game. Thompson hit all three attempts, which would send the game into overtime.

The teams traded free throws in the beginning of overtime before Thompson drained a three-pointer to put McDaniel in front, 52-49. Miller scored on the other end and the Devils made a steal, looking to take the lead. Dickinson failed to score, giving the Terror the ball with 1:32 remaining in overtime. Sisco came up with a huge block and Ashley Kunkle (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) made it pay off, hitting a three-pointer to put the Devils on top, 54-52, with 1:07 to play.

Acton converted to tie the game and then gave the Terror the lead after being fouled on a rebound on the other end. Miller made a strong move to the basket to knot the game once more with just 16 seconds remaining. The Terror had a final attempt but could score the winner, sending the game to a second overtime period.

Rachael Rybak completed a three-point play after Kunkle scored a lay-up off her own miss to give McDaniel a 59-58 edge early in the period. Miller put the Devils on top with 3:33 remaining, 60-59, but that would be the final points for the Devils as the Green Terror outscored the hosts 15-0 in the final three minutes.

Thompson led McDaniel (6-13, 5-10 CC) with a game-high 23 points, hitting 8-of-13 shots. Acton recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Whitney Snoops recorded 16 rebounds and blocked six shots on the night.

Sisco and Taylor each scored 18 points for the Red Devils (8-11, 6-9 CC). Miller added five rebounds, two assists and a steal while Sisco tallied three steals. Carole Dempsey (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) added 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Kunkle tallied seven points, four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
