Titans Down Yellowjackets

More news about: UW-Superior

The last time the UW-Superior women's basketball team faced off against UW-Oshkosh, the Yellowjackets jumped out to an early lead before watching the Titans rally back to claim a victory.

Saturday afternoon provided a similar start, as UW-Superior again jumped on UW-Oshkosh early, jumping out to a 13-point lead in the first half.

And in circumstances again mirroring those of their first meeting, the Titans would rally back, eventually overtaking the Yellowjackets shortly before the end of the first half before holding firm in the second half to gain a 63-57 victory in their WIAC conference game in Oshkosh.

UW-Superior (8-15 overall, 2-12 WIAC) got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 9-0 lead with 16:52 left in the opening half following a three-pointer by Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis.), a layup by Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Minn.) and a basket and two free throws by Kelsey Thingvold ( Crystal, Minn.).

The Yellowjackets would continue to hold the lead over the next few minutes, getting three-pointers from Britnee Blake ( Superior, Wis.) and Kristen Nett ( Green Bay, Wis.) for a 15-2 edge with 15:17 showing on the clock.

But the Titans (12-12, 7-8) came right back, eventually taking their first lead of the game at 29-26 following a three-pointer by Megan Lund with 2:41 left on the way to taking a 35-29 lead at the break.

The Yellowjackets would make an early charge in the second half, cutting the lead to 44-41 on a basket by Thingvold with 11:00 left in regulation.

UW-Oshkosh managed to hold on to the lead however, going on an 11-4 run over the next 5:11 for a 55-44 lead following a basket by Shelby Churchill.

UW-Superior again cut the lead to three at 60-57 on a layup by Bri Davis ( Hermantown, Minn.) with 16 seconds left in the second half.

The Titans would hold on down the stretch thanks to two free throws by Kelsey Myklebust along with an additional free throw from Ashley Winterfeldt in the final 16 seconds to seal the victory.

Offensively, the Yellowjackets were paced by Thingvold's game-high 20 points.  Urmanski added 13 points while Hart contributed 11.

UW-Oshkosh was paced by Katie Kitzke with 17 points while Myklebust added 14.  Megan Wenig pitched in with 13 points for the Titans as well.

The Yellowjackets head to UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday.
