RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Alverno College was unable to overcome a poor first-half shooting-effort in a 70-59 loss to host Dominican University tonight at Igini Sports Forum in River Forest, Ill. The loss ends the Inferno's five-game road trip in which they finished 3-2, and 2-2 in Northern Athletics Conference play.
The Inferno shot a measly 27 percent (8-of-30) from the floor in the first period, including an 0-of-5 effort from long range, while the Stars made 57 percent (16-of-28) of their shots and 55 percent (6-of-11) of their 3-point attempts for the 44-22 score at intermission.
In the second half Dominican (11-2, 6-0 NAC) quickly extended its lead to 26--a game-high--at the 17:30 mark before the Inferno finally got things going on both ends of the floor. Alverno (5-7, 3-4) ended the game on a 20-8 run in the final 10 minutes for the 70-59 final.
Alverno shot 41 percent (13-of-32) in the second half, while Dominican was only 8-of-26 (31 percent) in the period.
The Inferno's Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) led all scorers with 22 points and had a game-high four steals to go along with seven rebounds.
Alyssa Jensen (Cudahy, Wis.) and Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) added 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Hannah Galstad (Holmen, Wis.) added five points and seven rebounds.
Dominican was led by Becky Christofferson with 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range.
The Inferno are next in action--and play their first home game in over a month--this Saturday, hosting Concordia University Chicago in a NAC contest at 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
