Boston, MA—Junior guard Stephanie Coro (North Providence, RI) scored a game-high 23 points, which included five three-pointers, to go along with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team nipped UMass Boston, 59-58, in Little East Conference action at the Clark Athletic Center.

The Anchorwomen (8-2, 1-1 LEC) will shut it down for finals and Christmas and will not play again for 26 days. The Beacons (8-2, 1-1 LEC), who saw a six-game win streak come to an end, will play at Framingham State on Tuesday, Dec. 14 before breaking for the holidays.

Junior forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, RI) was her usual dominant self in the post, scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds, just under half (36) of RIC's total output. Riley also dished out three assists and made one steal as she recorded her seventh double-double of the season.

The Anchorwomen had a tough afternoon shooting, making just 38 percent (21-for-55) from the field. Coro (8-for-18) and Riley (6-for-7) accounted for the majority of the offense while the rest of the team shot 7-for-20. RIC shot 32 percent (7-for-22) from downtown and 63 percent (10-for-16) from the field.

The Beacons outrebounded RIC, 38-36, and shot just marginally better. UMB posted a 40 percent (19-for-48) mark from the field, was 38 percent (8-for-21) from the field and made just 55 percent (12-for-22) from the charity stripe.

The turnover margin was fairly close (UMB 25, RIC 20), while the Anchorwomen picked up one additional steal (12, 11).  The constant full-court pressure by Rhode Island College produced 25 points off of 25 UMass Boston turnovers. Junior guard Nicole Girard (Foster, RI) chipped in with four assists and three steals.

For the Beacons, freshman guard Colleen Hooper (Mansfield, MA) led the way offensively with 22 points including four 3-pointers. Freshman guard Kendra Mosley (Indian Head, MD) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 points, and freshman guard Senteria Renwicks (Baltimore, MD) added 13 points.

The first six minutes of the game were tightly contested until a three-pointer by Hooper at 13:19 sparked an 8-0 run for UMass Boston that was capped by freshman guard Colleen Buck (Greenfield, OH) at the 10:59 mark when she drained a shot from behind the arc. Rhode Island College responded with a long run of its own, 15-5, to take the lead, 24-22, on a layup by junior guard Brittany Saccoccio (Glocester, RI) with 3:39 to play in the half. The teams traded the lead until a pair of free throws by Renwicks put the Beacons on top 31-27. However, the Anchorwomen scored four points over the last minute to tie the contest 31-31 at halftime.

Rhode Island College began the second half with a sustained full-court press that caused five Beacons turnovers in the first five minutes and opened up a 36-31 lead as a result. A three-pointer by Hooper 6:27 in was the first basket of the half by UMass Boston and helped spur a comeback that culminated in a 38-38 tie at the 11:21 mark. The Anchorwomen reestablished a 47-40 advantage but the Beacons again chipped away to get within one point with just under five minutes to play.  Down the stretch Rhode Island College won the battle of free throws which proved to be the difference.
